Photography Basics

What does composition mean?

In the visual arts, composition is the placement or arrangement of visual elements or 'ingredients' in a work of art, as distinct from the subject. It can also be thought of as the organization of the elements of art according to the principles of art.

The Rule of Thirds

The rule of thirds is one of the main “rules” in art and photographic composition and stems from the theory that the human eye naturally gravitates to intersection points that occur when an image is split into thirds.

Watch the video below to see more about the rule of thirds and how to use it.

the golden spiral

The golden spiral is based on the Fibonacci sequence, and is an even more powerful tool for creating a good composition. However, most phones and cameras don't have an overlay for this. But as you can see below the golden spiral is close to the rule of thirds.

Assignment - 50 points

Take at least 10 photos that use either the rule of thirds, or the golden ratio. When finished we will share our photos on the TV and describe how they use at least one of the two methods for creating a good composition. To get the points for this assignment you must go to the next assignment, Importing Photos.
