Course Description
Foundations of Creative Media is an introductory course designed to inform students about careers in creative media, including digital design and digital film production. This Level 1 course serves as the foundation course for both the Digital Design and Film & Media Production programs of study.
Upon completion of the course, a proficient student should be able to explain what comprises the creative media industry sector, explain principles of digital design and its influences, demonstrate basic knowledge of digital camera and video equipment, and create a digital photo collection using design and equipment knowledge. A student will also be able to describe various occupations and outline the steps necessary to advance in specific careers.
Below are the standards that we will be covering in this class.
Summarize multiple sources of information (e.g. online and print) to identify various careers in digital design or film and media production.
Examine local job posting boards (print/online) to analyze current job availabilities for digital design or film and media production professionals.
Practice a mock interview, including the elements of professional dress, cover letter and resume, portfolio, and follow-up.
Summarize what is creative media and the range of industries that fall under this industry sector.
Examine the evolution of creative media through technology.
Critique how creative media has influenced Hawaii and how Hawaiian culture has influenced creative media, particularly in digital design and film/media.
Explain the basic principles and elements of design.
Examine the role of visual design in digital design and film/media production on user experience.
Examine the rules of composition and their uses in digital photography and digital videography.
Demonstrate the ability to operate a digital camera.
Demonstrate the ability to operate digital video equipment.
Demonstrate the ability to utilize a tripod or other camera or video mounting device.
Recognize vector and raster image file formats and their uses in digital design.
Explain codec and container and the different video file formats used in digital video production.
Demonstrate the ability to apply basic typography to a digital photograph.
Analyze laws and regulations protecting intellectual property in creative media industry.
Examine the role of labor union representation in Hawaii’s creative media industry.
Create a themed digital photo collection.
