Drawing People

Knowing the bones and major muscles groups will help you understand how everything fits together.

The average human body is about 7 to 8 heads tall. Look for size relationships to help get the proportions correct. For example the legs are about a head longer than the arms from shoulder to fingertip. Or the elbows are close to the bottom of the rib cage.

Gesture drawings are quick, loose sketches that will help you warm-up and get the basic form of the figure.

Practice doing quick 30 second gesture drawings for the following poses.

30 minute drawing - choose one of these figures to draw, or find your own. If you choose your own image it must be a photo of a real person and they shouldn't be covered in too many clothes. Just like you need to understand the basic anatomy under the skin, you need to understand the basic anatomy under the clothes. If you can't draw the figure under the clothing you won't be able to effectively draw the clothing.
