Photo Manipulation Part 1

The next few lessons will be focusing on how to digitally manipulate photos. To create images similar to the one above you will need to use multiple tools, but one of the most important is the Clone Stamp Tool. Follow the steps below to learn how to use the Clone Stamp to alter an image.

Click this image to open the hi-res version. Download it to your computer, then open it in Photoshop.

Once you've opened your image in Photoshop you will be using the Clone Stamp Tool to erase the man standing in the field.

Click the play button on the image preview, or click Watch quick video to see how the tool is used.

When using the Clone Stamp Tool usually the best brush to use is a Soft Round brush with the Hardness set around 50%.

If you notice the edges are either too hard or too soft adjust the Hardness.

The treeline doesn't noticeably repeat other areas.

Notice how the grass repeats? This is a clear sign of photo editing! Don't make these!

Some areas are easier to fill in than others. As you use the brush you will notice that it copies from one area and pastes to where you click.

To make your image convincing you must sample from different areas to avoid repeating patterns. Repeating patterns are a sign of photo editing.

When finished you should have an image like the one on the left.

If you can see areas that were erased, repeating patterns, or clear brush strokes then your grade will be lower.

When finished, save your image as a JPEG and upload it to your folder on the Google Drive.
